Boys in Firing Line Need Reading Material

A 1944 letter from Farley Mowat

Our boys in action in Italy are in need of reading material, such as pocket book novels or western and detective magazines. They mean a great deal to them.

A letter from Lieut. Mowat, with H.P.E.R. in Italy, to his father, Major Angus Mowat, contains the following:

“You are trying to do something about books for the troops at home but the need here is so much greater; there’s no comparison. We cannot get reading material. I wish you would make this a personal crusade. The importance of books to us is something you will know from experience. I’m not asking this for myself as an individual, but l’ve seen what a paper backed novel can do for men who have been under fire for a week and who then have nothing to do but sit.”

While I.O.D.E. headquarters at Toronto is making a certain number of shipments, the bulk of the books for Italy are bought in London by the Legion. It may be due to a shortage of shipping space, but the H.P.E.R. officer reports that none are getting through to the front line troops.

The Gazette is sure that individuals and organizations will immediately send this desired reading material, either to individuals in the unit or in care of the Commanding Officer. They would have to be sent as “soldier’s comforts” at the regular parcel post rate, with a limit of 11 pounds.

Donations Welcome

The Gazette will receive cash donations for the purpose of purchasing pocket novels (39c each) and new magazines, and for postage. Donations of such books and magazines will be welcomed.

Everyone is urged to help fill this need—at once and it will be appreciated if The Gazette is informed of any being sent.
